Turn Your Home Into An English Cottage

If you are a romantic at heart, then I am sure you enjoy romantic comedies, otherwise known as “chick flicks.” These movies are broadly light hearted, fun films that follow one or much more couples through the trials and tribulations of love. One of the best date movies to come out recently was “The Holiday” staring Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz. In this movie, Winslet owns an adorable English cottage outside of London, which has everything from the quintessential chimneystack and sloping roof to the old-fashioned china and quality sideboards. Even though the set crew really built this small cottage for the purpose of the movie, there are several real cottages sprinkled throughout England that bring you back to the time of Jane Austen.

If you are a fan of this time period, there are several changes your can make to your home to make it feel like an authentic English cottage actually if you are living in the middle of New Jersey. Here are some great tips to bring 18th century England into your home!

Focus first on the walls and the floor. In terms of paint or wallpaper, you should aim for lighter colors such as yellows, pinks, off-whites and blues. Floral print wallpaper looks good and, because you would most likely not see this pattern in a modern style home, it brings you back to Old England immediately. The floor of a traditional cottage would often be unequal due to the unleveled ground and the normal wearing-down of the floor. You should not really break up your floor for this unequal feel, though. Instead, pull up the carpet and use the wooden floors underneath. Then, invest in some hand woven rugs to place throughout your home.

The next most important feature is the furniture. Quality sideboards are perfect! These wood buffet tables sit on the side of the room underneath a mirror or framed picture and are the ideal surface on which to keep a vase full of clean flowers. You also need to create a cozy reading corner, preferably near the fireplace. A large, overstuffed chair with a pile of books, classics of course, sitting on a table beside it is a necessary addition to every cottage living room. Add an old-fashioned whistling teapot in the kitchen and some fine china on which to serve tea and scones and you are all set. Everyone who comes to visit will feel they have traveled back in time and will enjoy how cozy you have made your home feel!
